Lindsey Graham Defends Trump’s TikTok Ban Threat

China critic Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., says it’s reasonable for President Donald Trump to be considering a ban on the popular social media app TikTok from operating in the United States.

In a Saturday night tweet, Graham, who heads the Senate Judiciary Committee, said there’s reason to be wary of the Chinese-owned company sharing users’ data with the Chinese government.

“I understand your concerns,” Graham said. “However President Trump is right to want to make sure that the Chinese Communist Party doesn’t own TikTok and most importantly — all of your private data.”

Trump announced the plan to reporters on Air Force One Friday night, citing national security concerns. A TikTok spokesperson asserted American user data is stored in the United States — and that there’s American investment in the app.

But American users howled, accusing Trump of threatening freedoms of speech and expression.

ByteDance Ltd., the Chinese parent company of TikTok, had been in talks with Microsoft about a sale of the app — and Graham said he liked that idea, calling it a “win-win.”

“Have an American company like Microsoft take over TikTok,” Graham tweeted, saying it “keeps competition alive and data out of the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.”
